The Winter Garden

As I put the finishing touches on this newsletter it is midday and the temperature is 70 degrees.  Was it really in the lower teens just two weeks ago? Gee Whiz!

leather leaf mahoniaI enjoyed a walk around the garden yesterday and took some photographs.  Too often we think of our winter gardens as absent of color but that's simply not true.  It is truly a great time to come visit the gardens.  We have many different types of evergreen trees and shrubbery which provide a beautiful backdrop of greenery.   One of the smaller evergreen shrubs is the Mahonia bealei, commonly called the leather leaf mahonia.  It is a member of the barberry family.  It grows to be about 4-6 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide.  It has large, pinnately compound leaves with erect, unbranched, stiff stems.  It is a native of China and is ...

Holiday Festival - Supper with Santa - Thank You
Fall in Clark Gardens
Dear Friends,
As Thanksgiving approaches the staff at Clark Gardens is thankful to our many friends and supporters of the gardens.  Our membership and volunteer program has grown in both numbers and strengths.  In 2010 we will celebrate our 10th anniversary.  This would not have been possible without your support.  Thank you!

BOOtanical Festival saw a record number of attendees.  Over 1200 people attended the festival.  The admission fee to enjoy the Halloween fun was a nonperishable food item.  Through the generous donations of our guests, food items were donated to the three area food banks, First United Methodist Church, First Christian Church and the New Haven Ministries.  All three food banks are grateful for the donations.

Dear Friends,

This summer has flown by. June's Music and Art Festival was an amazing experience for the Gardens. The nights were beautiful all be it a little warm. Our first night we were serenaded under a full moon. Totally cool. We thank the bands, musicians, sound guys and David Adams. David booked the bands for the event and he did a great job.

garden classFall will soon be here. I know this because I watched the first preseason football game last night. We look forward to the season change; hopefully more rain and much cooler temperatures. The guys in the Gardens continue to work nine hour days, including Max. I don't know how they do so, but I do appreciate and admire them for their diligence and conviction. Thanks to them the Garden is just as beautiful in August in 105 degrees as it was in May in 90 degrees. ...
