Children's Books Authors October 2, 2010
What do goats, gratitude, the healing power of gardens, pumpkins and squirrels have in common? Clark Gardens Fall Festival on October 2nd! Five award winning children's authors will be in the garden reading their books and interacting with the young and young at heart.
Author Cherie Colburn will be sharing her award winning book, Our Shadow Garden. Cherie accepted the Growing Good Kids Award on July 24th at the 2010 National Children and Youth Symposium. She was one of only four children's book authors to be recognized by the American Horticultural Society and the Texas AgriLife Extension Services' National Junior Master Gardener program for effectively promoting an understanding of and appreciation for gardening, plants, and the environment.
Our Shadow Garden follows a young boy and his grandfather as they embark on a mission to transform grandmother's garden into a night-blooming oasis while she is ill and unable to go outside. Cherie Colburn's tale educates young readers about gardening techniques while also instilling in them an appreciation for nocturnal plants and animals.

TDA Quilt and Natural Fiber Exhibit October 2 to October 24, 2010
Clark Gardens is pleased to host the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) Traveling Quilt Exhibit. Since 1997 the TDA has sponsored a quilting competition. A theme is chosen and quilters are provided the materials to produce a "block" of the quilt. Blocks are judged with winning blocks made into a quilt. Themes highlight various aspects of life in Texas from historical to agricultural and spotlight Texas agriculture products including cotton, leather, mohair and wool. The competition is held every other year with the "winning" quilt unveiled at the State Fair of Texas.
This year the exhibit hosted at Clark Gardens includes all of the quilts except for this year's 2010 winning quilt. Included in the exhibit will be the second place quilt from 2008. The theme for 2008 "Toast A Rising Star" highlighted the burgeoning Texas wine and grape growing industry. Based on the high quality of entries a second place quilt was made. The official unveiling of this quilt will be held at Clark Garden's Fall Festival, October 2nd at 12:30 pm. Quilters from across the State will be invited to join us at this event. Mary York of the TDA will be on hand for the unveiling.
Texas is full of talented quilters and fiber artists. Their handiwork and craftsmanship is evident in these beautiful and artistic quilts. Quilts on display are: 2006 Legendary Ranches of Texas; 2004 Texas Yes!! And Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids; 2002 Texas Blooming Floral; 2000 Millennium Quilt and 1997 Common Threads of Texas.
This exhibit is sure to delight not only quilters but all of us who love life in Texas!! The quilts are on exhibit daily from October 2-October 24. Regular admission fees apply.
